The Lockdown Collective in Partnership with GIB Financial Services
The last 21 days of the National Lockdown have been an interesting and challenging time for most South Africans, business and individuals alike. GIB Financial Services is exceptionally proud to have partnered with an incredible initiative during this time. Called The Lockdown Collection, it has featured a unique collection of 21 art pieces by a spectrum of South African artists reflecting the thoughts, feelings, vision or captured moments of their COVID-19 experience. Every day a new art piece has been revealed, each available to be sold on auction, with all the proceeds going to the President’s Solidarity Fund, a Vulnerable Visual Artist Fund and for the Artists themselves.
The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the world and it’s quite possible that it will take years for the global economy to recover, which will have dire implications for the South African economy. So as we move into part two of the national lockdown it is imperative that we all take the time to reflect on how this pandemic has changed the world, by starting to look at the impact that we as individuals and as a society have had on the world.
Diane Victor, The Lockdown Collection’s Day 6 artwork in partnership with GIB Financial Services expresses this concern perceptively in her artwork “Eating Ones Tail” and by further stating “I feel that as a society obsessed with its own image and the consumption of its image, as well as in the consumption of the world’s natural resources at an alarming rate, we become our own Ouroboros and eat ourselves and all that surrounds us.” This should remind us, that just as just as fragile and volatile the medium of using smoke is to create her artwork, our consumption choices are fragile and volatile too and have a far wider impact on society, economy and the world as a whole.
